Description
(Callicarpa Americana) This shrub has large toothed green to yellow-green leaves 6-8 in. In springtime, tiny lilac flowers appear. By autumn the flowers give rise to berries in striking metallic violet in the fall. The beauty berries are packed tightly together in clusters that encircle the stem. The berries last well into the winter and are an important survival food for birds and other animals, though they will not eat them until other sources are depleted. The berries are highly astringent but can be made into wine and jelly.
